Why a Mustache Set?

Tomorrow marks the release of the Mustache Franken-Set which happens to coincide with the start of something that is very important to me:   MOvember.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in the US and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

For the fourth year, I'll be forgoing my razor (and my wife's kisses as she no like lip hair) to raise money for Men's Health and I'd invite you to join me and my team HERE.  Also, if you are so inclined, you are welcome to make a donation HERE.

Thanks in advance for your support and please enjoy the 700+ mustache cards that I will be featuring over the next month!

    Drake

Grabbed this well-loved Drake University card to add to my 1910 T-51 Murad collection.

I am continually amazed at the great pictures on these cards.

    Build Your Own Moustachas

Editors Note:  This will LITERALLY be the greatest blog post I have ever had the pleasure of writing.

I didn't think it would be possible to trump the genius of the inception of the Mustache Set.  I was wrong.  Words cannot express how creative dayf is (which may be the most obvious statement I've ever typed on this blog).  So I'll let his creativity do the explaining.

I humbly present the Build Your Own Mike Moustachas Card.

    THE INSERTS

    THE RESULTS

    ZOMFG!!?!!???!?!  Am I right???!??!?!

Thankfully dayf was able to pull himself away from the ponies long enough to share his brilliance with me!

Also, thankfully he was able to knock about a dozen and a half cards off my wantlist, as well as adding the two biggest cards to my set thus far.

    Thanks for the cards dayf!

    Hochevar Love from Spankee

I received a surprise manilla envelope from Spankee of My Cardboard Mistress the other day.  Not only does Spankee have one of the greatest blog headers, but he is very generous when stuffing his bubble mailers (editors note:  I tried writing the previous sentence a dozen times and could never convey my feelings without it sounding like a double entendre, which seems fitting for this post).

Most importantly, I received a coveted "Collect" sticker which hopefully proves that I'm now an official member of the collecting community.

Second, there were a plethora of Hochevar cards.

And, best of all, there was a 2008 A&G mini no-number Hochevar that I needed for my collection.

Thanks for the love Spankee!  I will work on finding something for you from your wantlist.

Mustache Set Donations: Too Many Grandersons

Dennis was one of the early donators toward the Mustache Set, so there were very few that he sent that weren't used in the set building.

    Thanks for the cards Dennis!

    Hope Diamond

So I picked up a card that I thought my wife would think was nice.  Diamonds and wives go together like peanut butter and jelly, right?  Not always.

The card is a 2011 Topps Update Luke Hochevar Hope Diamond variation, #d 29/60.

But my wife was less than impressed.  She didn't like the sparkley background.  But, like it or not, the card had to be added to my collection.  I wonder what she'll think about the boozey version.

Mustache Set Donations: Sewingmachineguy on Cards

The Sewingmachineguy stitched some classic staches into my set.

    Thanks for the cards SMG!

    Mustache Set Donations: Cardboard Heaven

Some modern day top-lip top-coats were sent my way by Cam. Here is one that didn't make the set.

    Thanks for the cards Cam!

    Mustache Set Donations: Reader Steve

Since the inception of the Mustache Set, Reader Steve has been sending me a steady stream of mustache cards.

Thanks for the cards (and for reading) Steve!

    Hitting a PC Triple

I recently hit a personal collection triple on ebay.

First I nabbed a Dexter Fowler four panel relic from the 2011 Topps Marque release. I was happy to get this card because it appears to have a piece of black patch in one of the windows.

Purchase number two yielded my first 1910 T51 Murad card that is golf related.  It's of Baker University and it is one of my favorites.

Finally, thanks to my third purchase, I now own 4% of the 2008 Baseball Heroes Luke Hochevar gray autographs.

    Next stop, world dominance.

Mustache Set Donations: Plaschke, Thy Sweater Is Argyle

When he wasn't busy building rainbows of Kemp, Kershaw, Martin, or Sands, Greg Z. was kind enough to send me a rainbow of mustaches.

    Thanks for the cards Greg!

Mustache Set Donations: My Sports Obsession

When he wasn't busy obsessing about his sports, Jeff sent me some classic mustaches.

I believe most of these cards were kept out of the set because they coincided with some equally classic early-80s football mustaches.

    Thanks for the cards Jeff!

    Mustache Set Donations: Jaybarkerfan's Junk

When he had a spare moment away from running his killer draft party, jaybarkerfan sent me some killer mustaches.

Thanks for the mustache help JBF!

    Mustache Set Donations: Crinkley Wrappers

I got some great early-90s Upper Deck staches from Crinkley Wrappers a while back.

It makes me wonder what's in the final set that would make it possible to exclude 'The Hawk' or a jheri curled Dion.  Thanks for the cards Crinkley!

    Mustache Set Want List Update

A very HUGE thank you goes out to The Lost Collector for knocking nine cards off my Mustache Set want list today.  I'd love to put up a scan of the cards, but each card he sent is going directly into the set so we'll have to wait a few weeks to see what he sent.

    I now need Mustached cards 16, 55, 216, 220, 400, 448, 454, 479, 537, 548, 558, 564, 569, 586, 596, 616, 635, 641, 644, 648, 650, 655, 662, 663, 665, 669, 677, 680, 681, 684, 686, 688, and 699 to complete my set, which means I'm about 30 cards shy of completing my first set.

I'd love if you'd dig through your junk era over-production era dupe boxes for some mustachioed greatness to send my way!  And while you're there, be sure to send any unwanted serial numbered Topps parallel cards to Robert of $30 a Week Habit.

A serial numbered franken-set that is twice the size of mine?  Count me in (and sign Robert up for a psych eval!).

Thanks again for the great staches LC!

    Mustache Set Donations: Capewood's Collections

I sure am glad that I was able to snag these mustache cards out of the Capewood Collection.

    Thanks for the donation Capewood!

Mustache Set Donations: Cheap Card Collecting

As a bargain hunter myself, I always enjoy the great information provided at Cheap Card Collecting.  I also enjoyed the mustache cards that he sent over.

These cards are even better due to the fact that Eckersley is still rocking his mustache and mullet in the baseball broadcast booth.  Thanks for the cards Triple-C!

Mustache Set Donations: Cards from the Quarry

Before taking his recent hiatus on his blog Cards from the Quarry, Hiflew was kind enough to make a generous donation to my mustache set.  Here are some of the cards that didn't make it into the final set.

Great cards from a great guy.  Hopefully he'll get back to blogging soon because I always enjoyed reading the thoughts of a fellow Colorado Rockies fan.  Thanks Hiflew!

I FINALLY OWN A JOHN STOCKTON AUTOGRAPHED CARD!!!!

And it's serial numbered and I was able to get it for a reasonable (to me) price.

Sorry for the yelling earlier, but I am over the moon to be able to own an autograph of my favorite athlete of all time.

Now we will return you back to your regularly scheduled program in progress...

Here are some soup strainers that will be useful when feasting at BA Benny's Baseball Card Buffet.

Thanks for the donation BA Benny!
