Editors Note:  This will LITERALLY be the greatest blog post I have ever had the pleasure of writing.

I didn't think it would be possible to trump the genius of the inception of the Mustache Set.  I was wrong.  Words cannot express how creative dayf is (which may be the most obvious statement I've ever typed on this blog).  So I'll let his creativity do the explaining.

Also, thankfully he was able to knock about a dozen and a half cards off my wantlist, as well as adding the two biggest cards to my set thus far.

Hochevar Love from Spankee

I received a surprise manilla envelope from Spankee of My Cardboard Mistress the other day.  Not only does Spankee have one of the greatest blog headers, but he is very generous when stuffing his bubble mailers (editors note:  I tried writing the previous sentence a dozen times and could never convey my feelings without it sounding like a double entendre, which seems fitting for this post).

Most importantly, I received a coveted "Collect" sticker which hopefully proves that I'm now an official member of the collecting community.

Second, there were a plethora of Hochevar cards.

And, best of all, there was a 2008 A&G mini no-number Hochevar that I needed for my collection.

Thanks for the love Spankee!  I will work on finding something for you from your wantlist.

Mustache Set Donations: Too Many Grandersons

Dennis was one of the early donators toward the Mustache Set, so there were very few that he sent that weren't used in the set building.

Hope Diamond

So I picked up a card that I thought my wife would think was nice.  Diamonds and wives go together like peanut butter and jelly, right?  Not always.

The card is a 2011 Topps Update Luke Hochevar Hope Diamond variation, #d 29/60.

 

But my wife was less than impressed.  She didn't like the sparkley background.  But, like it or not, the card had to be added to my collection.  I wonder what she'll think about the boozey version.

Hitting a PC Triple

I recently hit a personal collection triple on ebay.

First I nabbed a Dexter Fowler four panel relic from the 2011 Topps Marque release. I was happy to get this card because it appears to have a piece of black patch in one of the windows.

Purchase number two yielded my first 1910 T51 Murad card that is golf related.  It's of Baker University and it is one of my favorites.

Finally, thanks to my third purchase, I now own 4% of the 2008 Baseball Heroes Luke Hochevar gray autographs.

Next stop, world dominance.

Mustache Set Donations: Crinkley Wrappers

I got some great early-90s Upper Deck staches from Crinkley Wrappers a while back.

It makes me wonder what's in the final set that would make it possible to exclude 'The Hawk' or a jheri curled Dion.  Thanks for the cards Crinkley!

Mustache Set Want List Update

A very HUGE thank you goes out to The Lost Collector for knocking nine cards off my Mustache Set want list today.  I'd love to put up a scan of the cards, but each card he sent is going directly into the set so we'll have to wait a few weeks to see what he sent.

I now need Mustached cards 16, 55, 216, 220, 400, 448, 454, 479, 537, 548, 558, 564, 569, 586, 596, 616, 635, 641, 644, 648, 650, 655, 662, 663, 665, 669, 677, 680, 681, 684, 686, 688, and 699 to complete my set, which means I'm about 30 cards shy of completing my first set. 

I'd love if you'd dig through your junk era over-production era dupe boxes for some mustachioed greatness to send my way!  And while you're there, be sure to send any unwanted serial numbered Topps parallel cards to Robert of $30 a Week Habit. 

A serial numbered franken-set that is twice the size of mine?  Count me in (and sign Robert up for a psych eval!).

As a bargain hunter myself, I always enjoy the great information provided at Cheap Card Collecting.  I also enjoyed the mustache cards that he sent over.

These cards are even better due to the fact that Eckersley is still rocking his mustache and mullet in the baseball broadcast booth.  Thanks for the cards Triple-C!

Are You Ready for Some MUSTACHES!!!?!??!?!??

Because I sure as hell am!

I can't help it, the anticipation of the unveiling of my much anticipated and never replicated Mustache Franken-Set is almost too much for me to bear.

My plan is to start posting my Mustache Set on November 1st, a date that will soon make perfect sense.  But first, I'd like to pay tribute to the people who have made this set possible.  So far, I've received donations to the set from 16 people.  And, if my math is correct, there are about 16 days left before the start of November.

So, from now until November 1st I'll be posting some of the cards from said donators that for one reason or another did not make the official set (and if I'm being honest, as I was scanning the cards, I was starting to wonder why the cards weren't included because there are some real beauties about to be posted.  But I'm sure I had my reasons at the time.)

Also, during the next two weeks, I'll be announcing the rules to the first ever contest here at Manupatches and Mustaches (which will be the name of the blog for at least the next month and a half).

And if you're still planning on donating some mustache cards, fear not, donations will be accepted throughout the months of October and November.  And be sure to check out my Mustache Want List over to the right as I'd love to be able to complete my first set ever (even if I did have to make it up in order to do so).

I am now sleeping with a lawyer.

Yesterday we received word that my amazingly brilliant wife passed her Bar exam.  Words cannot express how proud of her I am for all of the hard work she has put in the past four years to make yesterday a reality.  She is my hero.

Tomorrow we will be traveling to the big city to watch a stage production of "To Kill a Mockingbird" with my brother-in-law and then will watch my sister run her first marathon Sunday morning.  It'll be a nice break from the daily grind of work and life.

Since this is a card-blog, I should also note that I bagged one of my White Whales recently which should be arriving at my house any day now.  I am very excited to get it posted.

2011 Triumvirate

Grabbed this lot of 2011 Hochevar parallels, since I'm fairly certain I only previously owned the base card. 

Although it doesn't show up as well in the scanns, the gold and black boarders seem much more textured than in years past, which is a feature I really like.

The gold is numbered to /2011 and the black is numbered to /60.  If I can track down the 1/1 parallel, I believe I'll have the Hochevar 2011 rainbow wrapped up. 

Colorado Collection: Sean Thompson

Sean Thompson is my latest addition to my Colorado Collection.  This former La Junta Tiger is a year younger than me, and had I played baseball past the junior high, would have been a rival of my high school baseball team.

Sean was drafted in the 5th round of the 2002 MLB draft by the San Diego Padres.  He spent some time with the Padres, Royals, and Rockies in the mid-2000s and has spent the past couple of years playing in some independent leagues. 

Birthday Giftcard Autograph: Eddy Mac

I have been wanting an Ed McCaffrey autographed card for my collection for months and figured I'd use up some of my eBay giftcard money to grab one.

The on-card autograph and relatively low serial number easily make up for the fact that he's in his college uni instead of my beloved Broncos.

Trade Report: Maier and Mustaches from The Sandlot

Recently, ...Joe from The Sandlot saw my Humber Auto from my box of 2007 Chrome and asked if I'd like to swap it for a Mitch Maier Chrome Auto.  I of course accepted the offer and my end of the bargain arrived in my mailbox today.

It's a great looking card, but it's a shame that Mitch will probably never be an important part of the Royals future now that Mike Moustakas is the third baseman of choice.

The thing that surprised me about this trade was the sheer size of the manilla envelope that ...Joe shipped the card in.  When I pulled it out of the mailbox, I thought, "Man, he really wants the Maier card to be shipped safely as he seems to have surrounded it with a ton of packing material."

Little did I know, but ...Joe also included a huge pile of Mustache Cards, a few of which plugged some gaps in my Franken-Set (cards 445, 543, and 668 to be exact) and a bunch of the others were strong enough to replace cards that were already in the set.

A big thanks to ...Joe and your card should be arriving shortly.

Belated Birthday Winnings from mmmrhubarb

My birthday is September 11th.  This year, my wife let me have a golf tournament for my birthday party.  It was great fun and while I was on the course, she sent me a text message that her step-brother and his girlfriend had given birth to their son on my Birthday.  I knew they loved me, but giving me a nephew for a birthday buddy was above and beyond the call of duty.

Turns out, I also have a birthday buddy in the collecting world, none other than mmmrhubarb of the great blog e rayhahn, rayhahn.  For his birthday, he had a contest to guess what he did for his birthday in 2001.  I guessed that he went to the rollerskating rink with his family.  It turns out that I was no closer than anyone else, but since we were birthday buddies, he decided to award me the contest win. 

Fast forward a few weeks and my winnings arrived in the mail, a glorious Todd Helton game-used bat card.  And it's of the Heritage design, which is one of my favorites.

This card will be a great reminder of my 30th birthday and of my newest birthday buddy.  Thanks!
