If I were going to build a new television news crew, the above four would be the dream team.  With Mayerl covering the weather, Stone and Bennett on the front desk, and Hall on sports, you couldn't miss.

Wills's Cigarettes

Here is another pair of Wills's Cigarettes cards I got out of my tobacco card loot this week.

I like the "S-appostrophy-S" in the company name more than I like the subject matter of these two cards.

These cards are kind of like the "junk wax" of their era.  They aren't worth much money and they aren't highly sought after, but they sure are fun to pull out of a bubble mailer.

Trade Report: M is for Manupatch by D. Dimwit

Did a card-for-card trade with The Daily Dimwit last week and I couldn't be happier with the results.  Both cards were #/99, both fit well into our respective collections, and both cards contained fabric.  My card is blue, his was red.  His card is a jersey relic and mine is a manupatch.

I love the overall look of this card.  It is very regal and old-timey feeling. 

Even though this is a "hat logo" manupatch, since I already have a Braves logo (J-Hey to be precise), it'll be the M in my Alphabet Collection, both of which I've resolved to complete by year's end.

Badges? We Don't Need No Stinkin' Badges!

Well, maybe a few badges couldn't hurt.

Picked up these little fellas when I went on a pre-WWII tobacco card binge last week, wherein I bought over 100 of them for well under $20 shipped.

After two 14-hour days in the classroom, I have neither the time nor the energy to do any research on these cards, but, using deductive reasoning and a dash of inference drawing, I'd venture that these were produced after 1918 in the UK. 

Ninety-year-old cardboard from across the pond for under a quarter a piece?  Hells and yes.  And there are plenty more where these came from.  Stay tuned.

Next week probably won't be as much fun for Broncos fan, since Pittsburgh was riddled with injuries today.  Also, I had a terrible flashback seeing a #87 Bronco getting knocked out with a leg injury.

Trade Report: Spelunking in the Quarry

I love making trades with Johnny from Cards from the Quarry.  My Rockies collection would be piddly were it not for his willingness to send so many of his duplicates my way.  This trade was no exception.  For one of my Dexter Fowler autographs, I am now the owner of the following cards, which I'll give a Fave Five treatment.

This was the second Allen & Ginter Rockies relic I've received in as many days and I can definitely see why people like them so much.  Very cool looking cards in hand.

This is my second autograph of the eldest outfielder on the Royal's active roster, which is a horrible sentence to write because it means that 2012 is the year I realized that I'm older than an entire MLB team's outfield.  Bummer for me.

Trade Report: A Tulo Bat from Robert

I never really enjoyed my collection when they were in pages.  I just kept them in pages out of necessity.  So, when I got my library card file, I moved all of my cards into the drawers and I couldn't be happier with the results.

Here are some awful pictures of my genius method for labeled the drawers.  I've modified (i.e. cut in half) a card that represents what is in that particular drawer.  Some were easier to find than others.  My player collections were easy because I only had to find a duplicate landscape-oriented card with their name on it.  Others took a bit more creativity.

The close-up picture shows one of my Hochevar drawers, my Dexter Fowler drawer, and my Manupatches drawer.  It took me a few days to figure out how I was going to label my manupatches drawer, until I found an old Boy Scout patch in a thrift store.  It worked perfectly.

Now that I had all of my cards out of pages and into drawers, I had/have a cubic ton of pages that I didn't need.  On that very day I saw that dual blogging Robert was starting to move his Serial Number Insanity set into pages, so I asked if he needed any.  I figured there was no reason for him to go out and buy some when I had a plethora of them idly siting.

In return he sent me my first Troy Tulowitzki relic card.

Trades like this are why blogging is so much fun.  I was able to help Robert with his collection (even if it was a bit unconventional) and I got a sweet new card for mine.  Thanks Robert!

Adding Another 2%

I picked up another 2% of the T51 1910 Murad Collegate Series yesterday when I added a Boston pole vaulter, an Allegheny fisherman, and a North Dakota footballer to my vintage drawer.

I almost like the cards that are beat to hell like the Boston card more than the cleaner cards.  I sometimes feel suspicious about a 100-year-old card that is in too good of condition.

I now own 27 of the 150 cards in this set.  I'm slowly creeping toward my goal of owning 50% by the end of the year.

Here are my Fave Five reasons why I'm glad I joined the Cardboard Heaven Card Draft that Cam put together to help raise funds for a Rose Bowl ticket.

I added a slew of Rockies and Royals to my collection, including some former Brewers (Cam's team) who were shipped out to KC for Greinke and anther Helton relic.  Sure, I may have over reached a bit by spending my first and second round picks on the Jeffress and Cain autos  (#4 and #17 respectively), but I made up for it by snagging the Helton relic in the third round.

I was able to get either an autograph or relic with each of my picks through the tenth round.  It was then that I made probably my shrewdest move by picking up my Eckersley die-cut in the 11th round.  How it slipped that far, I'll never know.  

All in all it was a ton of fun for a very reasonable price.  I was able to hand-select a bakers dozen of autos and relics, as well as a pile of commons and inserts, for less than a blaster from Walmart or Target.

Later I shall post scans of the cards that will be headed to my trade bait drawer in the ol' library card file.

Dunzo

My sister finished the watercolor painting I posted about yesterday and I couldn't be happier with how well it turned out.

I can't wait to get it framed and onto our office wall.

Sneek Peek

Today, my sister gave me a sneek peek of the latest work of art that I've commissioned from her.  She's been doing a lot of great watercolor paintings lately so I asked her if she would make one for me to hang above my library card file.

Here is what she's done so far.

She's giving my 2009 Topps Heritage #353 Luke Hochevar card the watercolor treatment and I couldn't be happier with how it is turning out.  I'll be sure to post a picture of the finished product once it's above my library card file.

Trade Report: A Diamond King "Pick & Roll"

During the recent Diamond King mega-end-of-the-year-contest, I mentioned that I'm a huge John Stockton fan.  So, even though I didn't win the contest, the Diamond King wanted to know if he could send some Stocktons and Malones my way.

Now, let me go on the record with the fact that I never have and never will turn down Stocktons or Malones.  They the alpha & omega, the foundation & apex, the peanut butter & jelly, the peas & carrots, and, most fittingly, the pick & roll of my collecting life.

And, as usually happens with trades between bloggers, I was completely blown away with Diamond King's generosity with his portion of the trade.  He filled a TON of gaps in my Stockton and Malone collections.

Since he sent so many cards, I thought I'd break it into two posts, starting with the Mailman.  The Malone section was full of plenty of "style" and "shiny".

Of the many, many, MANY dozens of Malones included, this card was probably my favorite.  Not only is it a USA Basketball card (which I love) but it was produced during the hayday of my childhood collecting and I'd never once encountered it.

The card is a regular sized card with perforations between each "mini card".  You really can't beat four of the NBA's greatest big men on one card.

As for the Stocktons, I think I will forgo my usual multicard post and will take some time featuring them individually since John Stockton is my all-time favorite athlete and Diamond King sent some great cards that deserve heightened focus.

Trade Bait: Tinsel From Under the Tree

I've spent the past 72-hours watching The Wire, The Big Bang Theory, Cougar Town, and Happy Endings dvds, so I thought it might be time to step away and scan some cards.

Here are the results from the blaster of 2011 Baseball Chrome, a rack pack of 2011 Update, and four loose packs of 2011 Heritage that I received over the Christmas holiday. 

All are available for trade, so let me know if you're interested in any of these cards.

First, some Chrome, since it's tinsel like qualities are what inspired the title of this post.

The purple Granderson is numbered 193/499 and the Walden Chrome Heritage Refractor is numbered 506/562.  The Heyward and Verlander seem to be base chrome, the Hanson and Maybin appear to be xfractor-style, and the Byrd, Jaso, and Sogard appear to be refractors but none are distinguished this way on the card backs.  I'm just going with how the cards look compared to previous years -- base have white boarders, refractors have chrome across the entire card, and xfractors have patterned chrome.

The following Chrome cards rounded out the blaster:

The four loose packs of Heritage yielded me zero Royals or Rockies, but they may help out anyone who is collecting the set.

I knew I wouldn't have the same success with my second Update rack pack as I had with my first, but it was still a fun group of cards to open.
